X is launching a native video editor and recorder for iOS, marking a significant step in the platform's effort to keep creators producing original content rather than recycling clips stolen from other platforms.
What's Included in the Editor
The new toolset brings several editing capabilities directly into the X app:
- Multilingual captions generated automatically from video audio
- Green-screen effects for dynamic background replacement
- Standard trimming, cutting, and clip-arrangement tools
- In-app recording to reduce friction for mobile-first creators
These features bring X closer to the native editing experiences offered by TikTok and Instagram Reels, which have long made it easier to produce polished content without leaving the app.
The Repost Problem
Stolen and reposted videos have been a persistent issue on X, where unoriginal content frequently outperforms creator-owned posts in engagement. By lowering the barrier to original production, X is betting that creators will have less incentive to recycle third-party clips.
The platform has been pushing harder on video as a revenue and engagement driver under Elon Musk's ownership, including expanded monetization tools for qualifying creators.
Platform Strategy
This editor rollout aligns with X's broader ambition to position itself as a serious video destination — not just a text-first social network. Android support has not yet been confirmed, suggesting the feature is still in early rollout stages.
For creators already building an audience on X, native editing tools reduce dependence on third-party apps and keep the full production workflow within the platform.
