Fidji Simo is stepping back from her full-time role as OpenAI's AGI chief, transitioning to a part-time advisor capacity, she announced on X. The departure marks the end of what was a brief but high-profile tenure leading the company's most strategically significant division.
A Short-Lived AGI Role
Simo took on the AGI chief title earlier this year, having previously served as CEO of Applications at OpenAI. Shortly after assuming the new position, she announced in April that she would be taking several weeks of medical leave due to a neuroimmune condition.
Her full exit now confirms that the leave has extended into a permanent departure from day-to-day responsibilities.
A Pattern of Executive Departures
Simo's exit is not isolated. OpenAI has seen a notable string of senior leadership changes in recent months:
- Brad Lightcap, the company's COO, stepped down from his role to focus on "special projects"
- Kate Rouch, OpenAI's CMO, also stepped down to prioritize her health, with plans to return in a "more narrowly scoped role"
These departures collectively signal significant churn at the executive level of one of the world's most closely watched AI companies.
What This Means for OpenAI
With AGI development sitting at the core of OpenAI's long-term mission, the leadership vacancy carries real strategic weight. It remains unclear who will assume Simo's responsibilities or how the organizational structure around AGI work will be reshaped going forward.
OpenAI has not yet publicly announced a successor or outlined changes to its leadership structure in response to the transition.
